Its not that women cant get a vote. Its that nobody get s a vote. Only faction leaders. If a women gets to that status then she can get a vote. In general women should be treated as property. given only as much respect as their man desevres. And the man is responsible for the actions of his women and children. I would mostly agree: 1. Only faction leaders get votes 2. Women can become faction leaders, however unlikely this may seem to us now 3. Sins of the father do not visit the son, but sins of the son do visit the father. This seem intuitive. Patriarchy is a natural order, which will institute itself before most other things even get asserted, like finding potable water sources. There may come a time to revisit it, but such a time tested and humane aspect of culture should not be feared. It should be embraced and accepted as a means of doing business. There will be no time to make people feel good about how things are done, only time to make sure that things are done. Those that oppose this simple tenet should be given a slice of bread and left on one of the remaining columns in the middle of the water. They can swim to shore if they decide that is in their best interest. Is anyone a car guy? A boat guy? We would need mechanical skills more than anything else I would expect. Joe Hunt I read is crafty and lives in the Carolinas. Should I hijack him on my mad dash up the coast?

I certainly agree with a patriarchal order, however, if any chick arises on the caliber level of Guenevere (Keira Knightly) in King Arthur, she will have my respect. Which brings me to another question; will the women be trained to fight and be warriors? When we begin our new culture, we should encourage all children, not just the boys, to be physical, i.e. wrestling, fighting, etc. No more dolls for girls, knives and spears from now on.
I just saw Land of the Dead the other day. We cannot become complacent and just expect the water to be a good natural barrier. Walls should be erected around the whole island, and then inner walls should also be erected to form concentric circles as redundant back-up systems. Finding the stone to achieve this will be difficult however.
Once the zombies get over their fear, or trepidation over the water, and realize they can just walk on the river bottom, we will be doomed. So the island itself isn't good enough, it must be fortified.
Actually, like Gondor, we should establish a small fortified encampment, or lookout tower on the shore, complete with escape tunnel or fortified stone hallway leading directly to the river. If the shit hits the fan over there, we will have advance warning.
Another great idea from the movie is to plan storage annex's or hidden outposts along the river leading up north for the eventual trek up to Canada. We would have to place food, water, ammunition, weapons, gas, maybe even vehicles as well, medical supplies, etc.
What about medical supplies? Where is the nearest hospital in Beacon?

OK, so Land of the Dead was in the theatres for precisely one week here. Then Blockbuster here did not stock it when it was released and actually had a sign posted to purchase it from anyone for the princely sum of $6. Finally a month later, a local rental chain got the DVD in its new releases and I just watched it.
Did Romero read this thread before making the movie? People using water as a barrier. The undead walking under the water. The goal of going to Canada to escape the undead. It was odd to me there was not a preview of the state of affairs before the film started (Director's Cut, maybe theatrical release had some clips from other films and backdrop). This thing just starts with narration that dead are walking and that people fear they could become intelligent.
I was a little disappointed there was not more to the movie than effectively a conflict between a couple characters that actually rarely interact at all. And at first I hated every single character I think. But Romero is really good at getting you to like characters who you don't at first. Money in a world of zombies seems crazy, but it's all paper and currency knows no bounds. I could see that happening.
Weird the references to terrorism & jihad. Especially since nothing at all seems in the least bit religious. Actually watching this film made me wonder where all the zealots espousing salvation would be in a time of dire suffering.
Back to the dead. They looked awesome. Lots of shadowy effects. I was really, really annoyed with that "Hollywood-moment" when the two characters shoot zombies over each other's heads. It is weird that the dead would know "Uhhhhh" means follow me. I get the idea that the dead body relives memories of actions and items used in the lifetime, like pumping gas. I don't get them learning how to use a machinegun or setting up explosives. Made me think of Natural Selection, are these the intelligent ones that have survived longer than their undead brethren? I swear Romero has one clown zombie in every movie! It was cool to see the biker dude from Dawn up there as a zombie.
I was pining for more of the "what do we do now" and "how do we make sense of life" or even just more of the supplies missions. I actually like Leguizamaramadingdong, but felt like him taking over the plot detracting from things I was more interested in. I guess that is the point, assholes like this are all around us. Cool to hear Romero and Hoffman both envisioning Kaufmas as Rumsfield. I could SO see that, Rumsfield eating your babies and telling you everything is just hokey-dokey, etc.

I thought it was cool that Romero says he never told any of the zombies how to walk, he just told them to walk like zombies. He said something like, "if I told them to do 'this', they would all be doing whatever 'this' is instead of being individuals."

Hey, I caught a nice Autralian zombie movie... with aliens too. If you want originality, don't watch a zombie movie. Anyway, it's kind of a low budget production, but it's called Undead. I liked it a lot.
