So I decided to make up my first 4e PC.
I get a silly idea for a dude that casts Darkvision on himself that the spell effect actually covers his head with a pumpkin. Just enough to get me motivated to working in a character idea into the new rules.
Sounded like a gnomish effect, but I quickly learned that gnomes are not included in the PHB. Fine, halfling it is. I figured the spell effect felt like a Halloween thing and Warlock class seemed to fit the bill, Fey Pact.
From there I filled in the blanks using the standard ability scores offered and picked powers. I learned powers are entirely about the battlefield and crafty spells fall under Rituals so I took the Ritual Caster feat.
Then I get stuck. No powers nor rituals matched on Darkvision. None I could easily find anyway, I was not in the mood to read every power for every class. I checked out the magic item section and there are darkvision goggles, so there has got to be a spell right?
Anyway, it was a confusing exercise. Lists, descriptions, and explanations for reading them are all over the place. Since it works a lot differently I was caught off guard by that. It also looks like at-will powers are just forever and a day used? It looked like the buff stuff only works until the next turn, scratch those from ever being attempted. Made me wonder if invisibility is the new stoneskins for this reason. Halflings get to make an enemy reroll an attack, which seemed like critical avoidance. Once an encounter seems like a lot of avoidance for the little people.

8 races, 8 classes. Made 8 PCs. It was interesting. The character creation phase of the game is simpler one you get the hang of it. However, forget about trying to look for something. Say you want to build a guy around a whirlwind attack you have in your mind. There might be a power in there to match but short of looking up every single power I really don't know how you would ever find it. I made first level dudes so I was curious if certain aspects of third edition were entirely removed. That's OK for Fox's Cunning, but DnD without Stoneskins or Mordenkainen's Disjunction does not seem the same. Maybe these spells and their ilk survive. Hell I don't know.
It is really apparent from the powers section that gameplay is targeting the pieces on the board. Makes minis or the online tool they advertise a vital component of the game instead of something borderline irrelevant. Lots of shifting and pushing powers to manipulate the placement of the pieces on the board. As a chess player this interested me. I liked the idea of it a lot more than the 3e tripping rules which I think were the only move the other guys around you could do without a spell.
1st level dudes totally have a wide range of things they can do and with at will powers you never become the party of perpetual sleeping in to regain powers. Or at least you don't have to be if you don't want it. The build felt more like a 5th level PC in powers. Dudes just start off the bat being heroic, no need to work your way up to it. I think that is great, first edition died a long time ago. After first level it seems like you stay in the same mode of character until 20th level? Not sure, did not flesh that out. I thought prestige classes were interesting but abused like hell in 3e so I won't miss them. On the other hand a guy that throws shuriken can only throw them so many different ways until you want to be able to do something else with the character.

I just noticed PHB 2 is coming out soon. This instead of the online board? Weird. I thought the whole advantage of 4e was it would use all the online tools?

Hey what?
D&D?
Yeah, Everything Buck said is true. No matter what the deal with 4th ediiton I really do wanna do a full module test run one day. Thats funny. Just the word "Module" dates my 1st edition ass.
Its funny to me that me and buck made plans to play 4e using the online tools. That was like over a year ago and they still dont have the online gameboard up and running. Just like that C generator disk that came with the PHB 3rd edition and teh later gametools. D&D just cant do computer shit.
Long live D&D

My mom got a webcam and Skype so she can see and talk to grandkids. Thanks DnD for making me figure out how to make that work a long time ago.
