This is crazy, I got a letter today informing me that I am automatically included in a class action against "Hewlett Packard". The suite brought against HP seeks damages due to the layout of certain of their personal computers. Specificially that no Windows XP system disk came with the computer. Instead these personal computers have an invisible partition which can be used for System restore. In addition there are 2 help folders that are not included on these personal computers. I have this model Hewlett packard. I think Papo and Larry do also. So HP and the founders of this class action have reached settlement. On July 26 this settlement will go before the court for final approval. When settlement goes through it sounds like anyone who owns one of these computers might just be awarded 2,500 dollars. NICE. I'm sure this is all just BS, but what a weird letter to get in the mail. Larry and Papo I hope you reistered those computers. I always wanted to be one of those lucky people who just fall into free money. Could this be it.

I get those letters often I have never responded though. Chances are you will get alot less than 2500 but any dollars are better than no dollars

I've actually been involved in several of these, the most famous being the class action lawsuit against Blockbuster Video for their overpriced late fees. I received a whopping $2.50 for my trouble.
The only ones who make out big-time are the "tort" lawyers because they take a 40% cut from the top and then the rest is split up between however many thousands or hundred thousand plaintiffs.
You may have a chance to get a substantial amount of money if there aren't a lot of plaintiffs in the suit, but the lawyers wouldn't even bother if there weren't thousands of people out there for them to represent. But like Darth Torres said, free money is better than no money.

I've gotten these letters before (not for HP) and I think I got a check once for several pennies. I had one for PayPal that offered me $50 and I never heard a thing about it ever since.
