Hey a Comic thread.
So i found myself wondering whatever became of Image comics. You know when Marvel and DC superartists including Jim Lee, Rob Leifield, and Todd Macfarlane all defected and started a new company.
Leifield (cable & X-force creator) got through a whole 10 issues of youngblood before calling it quites. Hes such a dick that image kicked him out. He now works where he can getting help from his old collaborate who currently writes Cable/Deadpool.
Lee (X-men) got through about 3 years of WildCATS before he turned the comic over to a new dude who introduced a new team. Eventually he defected from image and sold his company to DC. He now works prminently in DC.
Macfarlane: (Spiderman) Hes the only one still going. Hes still pumping out spawn to abyssmal sales buts he still there at image getting it done. Not to mention he makes mad dough off his toy line.
Image is still kicking arround though its seems their more of a catch all publisher for independant publishing. They dont even remotely compete with DC or marvel anymore. Oh and all those IMAGE #1s we bought aint worth shit because that all happened during the biggest comic purchasing bubble in hostory. FUCK

When Image came out, it was like a comic orgasm! The best artists from both companies, shiney, glossy paper with fantastic ink, excellent writing, innovative ideas, imaginative characters, (some not-so-imaginative characters). A chance to get in on the ground floor of a new age in comic book thinking, design, and creation. The artists were breaking free of the constraints of Marvel and DC, free to explore the limitless depths of their creativity. It was the American dream and they were poised to set the comic book world on its ear and create a new standard.
Then these artists realized that though they were very creative, they couldn't run a business, keep to a schedule, or run the daily grind of keeping up with consumer demand. Bean-counters, after all, do have a place in society. One by one, these great artists, who had burned their bridges, no, blew-up their bridges, succumbed to the pressure, and Image was no more. Marvel and D.C remained in-tact. Image was nothing more than a blip on the radar screen, a 2.0 tremor in San Francisco, a tiny meteor plooping helplessly into the endless depths of the Pacific Ocean.
So, now we have all these number ones, and number zeroes, that we all thought would be that Spiderman or Superman number one, hiding in someone's safe somewhere, worth thousands someday, but they're worth nothing, nada, zip, zed, zero, because every fuckin Tom, Dick, Harry, Ken and Rob have them too. And these artists we believed in? Like you said, McFarlane has Spawn, a character who has become infinitely uninteresting anymore, and Lee is doing Batman for D.C. I bet Lee had to do a lot of ass-kissing to get back into the mainstream.
After Image, comics kind of fell off though, didn't they? Sales are off, the artistry is not as impressive, and the "Ultimate" story-lines just don't grab me. What about you guys?

I have had resurgence into comics as of late.
I caught up on DC's big infinite Crisis which died directly into the late 80s classic of Crisis on Infinite earths. Its was really just reprocessed ideas. I see the original green lantern came back now after a short stint as The Spectre. I guess thats preatty cool but DC could never sustain my interest.
Meanwhile i checked back in with marvel to find that they have kindof reset the progress of their heroes. Like spiderman seems even younger and inexperieced then when i was reading comics. Apparently now he is being mentored by Iron Man who is making the spider suit do all kinds of crazy shit.
Marvel just finished a big world altering event and is going into another. The house of M just ended where Magneto changed the world and reality to make mutants rule. Can anyone say Age of Apocalypse redux. Whatever.
Now they are going into THE CIVIL WAR. Basiclally all superheroes have to register with the govenrment now and failure to do so is felony. So those who register will then have to hunt down those that dont. hence civil war. Iron Man is championing the government while Captain America is championing the unregistered. Meanwhile the Hulk was finally deemed far too dangerus so he was sent to barron planet where he could hurt no one else. In the words of Namor "Banner will return and kill everyone of you".
I cant say i am too impressed with any of it. It does seem alot more serious then i remember when i was reading comics. But i get the feeling that now all comics plot lines a re basically conceived to be candidates for screenplays. Not good.
One good thing i have to say is that the Cable & Deadpool comic that is currently running is one of the best comics i have ever read.

Someone sent me a link to the Marvel Comics database, perhaps it was Rob, and I decided to check out Cable. I'm not entirely sure why I like Cable, perhaps it is because he used to have his own SPACE-STATION! And he could 'body slide," teleport. Or maybe I just liked his kick-ass, take-no-prisoners mentality in an age of soap-opera X-Men whining. Either way, I checked out his data base entry.
I basically stopped reading just about the time Marvel got all screwy with the alternate universes thing, and Wolverine and Jean Grey were like a thing in the future, or something. But I did read that Cables latent powers finally came to fruition and he became very powerful. Cool. I always knew he had it in him, especially if Stryfe was so powerful and Stryfe was just a clone!
I was surprised to see that Cable and Deadpool are like a team, or team up on a regular basis, or have their own comic book. I always like Deadpool, ever since he kicked Shatterstar's ass.
I've actually considered restarting my comic collection now that KIII is here. I would like him to get a good background in comic book lore and experience superheroes.
What does "experience superheores" mean? Well, people living up to ideals against tremendous odds. And of course, have really cool super powers. There are a lot of good lessons to be taught in comic books, and lots of big tits to see too. ;D ;D

Yeah Cable and Deadpool comic is the best ever.
Your right though. They should not team up. But they did it really cool.
First comic they run into each other. Deadpool says "Are we gonna fight?"
Cable says "yes and no" Then cable uses his pyschic power to implode deadpools head.
A few hours later after deadpool regenerates he catches up to Cable again. Cable immediatly shoots in the skull killing him again.
But eventually they both end up getting effected by some crazy virus which melts people. The only solution is for them to take samples of each others blood. Only cables Techno-organic infected blood can halt the virus and then only deadpools regenerative powers can heal it. So they do this.
Except what happens is now deadpool and Cable are encoded with similar DNA. Greymalkin cant differentiate them. Everytime Cable bodyslides it takes deadpool with him. No matter what. So now everytime cable goes anywhere Deadpool is there. And you cant kill deadpool. So you just gotta deal with it. It gets better when deadpool realises he can bodyslide too.
Finally when they both resign to the fact that their gonna have to be involved in each other's shit they start working together. Now whenever shit gets real bad they both say it at the same time "Bodyslide by 2"
I'm serious when i say this might be the coolest comic of all time.

This does sound like the most awesome comic of all time. Is this a Cable title, a Deadpool title, a combination of the two? Did all this happen before the Marvel Universe shake-up? About how many issues or years have these two been together?
I am definitely going to buy a few of these next time I find myself near a reputable comic book shop.

Its both tehir titles but the narrative is truely deadpools. Hes a commentary charcter like spiderman anyhow. And it works to cable's mystique if its from deadpools perspective. Its in its 3rd year now. Issue number 29 is out now. As far as the world shaking events they side stepped the ntire house of M by having deadpool bodyslide to alternate earths duing that whole period. It was kind of cool cause the different earths he went to included the age of apocalypse and Days of future past.

Shit, man. It's just so true. I just finished reading the article you posted the link to. With so many of a single issue printed, and so many people savvy to the idea that comic books can be a potential goldmine, there is no possible way that a comic book could be so rare that it would ever be worth anything. Especially when comic book stores do indeed stockpile potential money-makers.
Maybe, the only thing that can buck this current system, is the "signed," "autographed" issue. Of course, to make this worth anything, you should get the comic signed by the artist, inker, writer, printer, publisher, etc, then get a picture of all of them signing the damn thing. This is a huge investment of time, as you would have to attend ComicCon and comic conventions all over the United States and even then, it would only add a few dollars of value to any perspective comic.
Not to mention, and please weigh in on this, does it seem like superheroes are literally saving the earth every few months from an unltra-powerful mutant, world-devourer, alien race, or future time-traveler, more so than in the past? I remember most titles having an actual storyline that was in place for years, with a monthly adventure, soap-opera-like back-stories, and then, once in a while, a huge, cross-title adventure to take down some particularly nasty bad guy. Then things went back to normal. Nowadays, it seems like there is an earth-shattering event going on all the time, which makes these earth-shattering events commonplace, which devalues these individual comics even more.

This all occured in the 80's when the "fanboy" got involved. I am sure you all know about this so I will not go on.

I subscribe to this newsletter from this website called Dynamic Forces. This is where I was able to buy an affordable representation of a very expensive piece of Spiderman artwork that I currently have on my wall in my office. I was so impressed with this piece of artwork, that I decided to subscribe to their free email newsletter. Basically it details special offerings, supposedly rare, to it's exclusive customers. I have never bought anything from them except for this Spiderman poster, but it still gives me a kick just to see what they are offering.
Two things caught my attention this week, both formner Image titles, "Wildcats" and "Wetworks." Both titles that I owned and loved, and may still have up in my attic. Now Image is defunct, and as far as I know, so are these titles, yet Dynamic Forces is advertising two offers that are reprinted below, note the price...
WILDCATS #1 1:50 INCENTIVE COVER BY JIM LEE
PRICE: $89.99 MSRP $149.99
Jim Lee makes his triumphant return to Wildcats, and he's bringing along an impressive new collaborator: superstar writer Grant Morrison! The man who redefined the JLA and Superman - and created groundbreaking works The Invisibles and WE3 - now brings his considerable talents to the Wildcats. In the aftermath of the events in Captain Atom: ARMAGEDDON, the WildStorm Universe has undergone a shift that will affect characters big and small. This first issue will reintroduce the Wildcats you know and love - but how will they differ? Be here in September to see the star-studded premiere of the all-new, bimonthly WILDCATS!
WETWORKS #1 1:50 INCENTIVE COVER BY WHILCE PORTACIO
PRICE: $89.99 MSRP $149.99
Fan-favorite artist Whilce Portacio's legendary special forces team returns in classic fashion, aided and abetted by acclaimed writer Mike Carey (HELLBLAZER, LUCIFER)! Dane, team leader of Wetworks, is on a mission. He's forming a new team with the best of the worst. It's a bad world, filled with vampires, werewolves and all manner of nasty creatures. Someone's got to keep them in line. That's Wetworks' job - and it's not going to be easy. Don't miss the action-packed first installment of "The Blood-Red Game!
Can you believe the price? Will a collector EVER make that money back if he put those two comics in a safe somewhere? NEVER! Dynamic Forces never tells you how many are printed, how many they keep for themselves, or the projected value, say, five years down the line. It's like, the inflated price makes one think that they are very rare, that they are very valuable, and are exclusive only to those in "the know." Meanwhile, DF sends out thousands of free e-newsletters, announcing these so-called "specials."
Not to mention, both these titles were completely defunct. Now they are starting them up again?! Wildcats on a bi-monthly basis, and Wetworks on a supposedly monthly basis, or limited series basis? These guys couldn't get these comics out on time in the first place, now all of a sudden they have their act together? What makes these guys think their comics will be worth more than Spawn, who McFarlane has managed to get out on time for ten years, who "spawned" movies and toys, yet his comic book is worth less than a roll of toilet paper. I should buy the first issue for $90? Blow me!
Comics these days are a scam, preying on those of us who read the great artwork of Jim Lee, Leifield, McFarlane, etc. Well, I for one, am as mad as Hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore! I want you to go to your windows. Open them up! Stick your head out and scream, "I'm MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!"

They cant be selling any comic for 90 dollars.
What does "1:50" mean. Does that mean comics number 1-50. That would make sense. Then its like 1.80 for a comic which great.
But yeah, comics are really dead. They just have not figured it out yet. Comics had died before and come back from the grave but in the electrinic age of computers and video games i dont think comics can ever resurface
