I feel like I have done this before but anyway this thread is for computer related info we might help each other with. Like new programs or ways to get shit done.
I just started getting down on Bittorrents which is the new method shareware (downloading song & movies and shit from other folks).
The best regular shareware programs i have seen are Kazaalite which has made shit, Limewire which is shockingly free of garbage, and Imesh which was good once but now comes with alot of adware that i hate.
Anyhow the bittorrent thing is wacky. You go to websites and search for what you want. Then you save the starter file to your disk. It then starts searching out and finding little bits of the file and assembling it. Its great for TV shows and shit like that. Missed last weeks episode of Law and Order. No problem. It turns up the next day on bittorrent. The program i using for this is Bitcomet.
My current antivirus program is AVG which free from their website. But to be really safe you should also have adaware which you can get from download.com or similar site.
The program we use to clone DVDs is xcopy. You can download it from shareware sites but you'll need to know all the tricks to install it properly.
Theres another program which goes along with the DVD clonging stuff called Anydvd. This strips any dvds of copy protection stuff. And it will also take out advertisments or other crap they stick on DVDs.
Anybody else got some good stuff out there.

I have used bit-torrents but they are completely illeagal and allot more risky than some of the other pay sites where you pay a yearly fee of around $30. Also try Shareaza it's like kazaa use to be without frozen assets and adware. Optimum Online comes with free EZ armor and Anti-virus programs+ I run a regular registry mechanic and disk cleaner programs just in case. Every thing is backed up of course. I was wondering if I purchased an external hard drive if it would add security to my computer in some way? I also use Netscape instead of internet explorer as most viruses a written for IE. I heard Mozilla is good as well. I set up my security to propt when something accesses my activex or javascript controls. Its a pain to click the box to allow every access but it adds to security. I have been virus free for 5 months now. Do I get a coin? I can't wait till Income tax to get a new computer. I can't wait to play "Dawn of War" and some of the new total war games. I have had Shogun for years and it was great so i can't wait. I do feel that gaming "consoles" will replace desk tops in a 5 years and do everything.

The progarm looks for orphaned files that are not used by your operating system. Anyway, you can see each item and do it one by one if you are not sure what to get rid of. Also you can restore the registry to the way it was with a click. So far it has not "cleaned" anything vital.

I run some gaming files off an external hard drive memory booster and it works great. 10 times the hard drive storage for 1/10 the price of a new machine I tell ya.
OK, I ghetto rigged a website through some bootleg webspace provided by Roadrunner/Time Warner. If anyone else has such service (or something like it) and is not interested in using their server space, drop me a line so that I can. It cuts out the ads that the traditional freebie sites post all over via banners or pop-ups. This is my shameless begging for more free shit.
File sharing: I use Limewire on occasion. Never had a problem. My nephew ran Kazaa and it caused major problems. The file that cannot be removed should be the program name. Very sticky, seemed to almost make its own backdoors? Limewire has been very well-behaved. Online banking should not be harmed provided that the passwords are not stored in an autofill file. Actually, my bank and eBay (also PayPal) do not even offer my password memorized by my machine I believe for this very reason. I truly believe that file sharing can be done so long as you avoid large files that are hosted by only one or two other dudes. Like wiki, the people filter through the crap and I go with the files that have the most hosts adhering to the theory of natural selection.

Concerning Service Pack 2:
In every instance of installing service pack 2 at best it slows your system a bit. But it definatly makes it more secure which for me is worth it. In one instance it costs massive damage and messed up mad shit. The only time i have seen it work perfect is when it comes preinstalled on a machine.
BUT REMEMBER There are many updates that your computer requires BEFORE upgrading to SP2. Always go to your computers manufacturer homepage for updates first.
And ofcourse your best bet is to create a restore point before you update. Though in my worst case scenario SP2 fucked that up too. I did it safely on multiple HPs and the one it messed up was a Dell.

I just bought a new computer. I got an e-machine with an Atholon 64, 3500+(2.2 ghz) and 1 gig of memory. It got 200gb hard drive and a Radeon 200 graphic card. I also got a 17" LCD display by westing house. It freakin rocks. I got the dual layer DVD R/W + a cd drive. I got the computer for $580 and the Lcd for $240 and consider booth a great buy. Both are best buys by PC world. I hope they are right. So far it's seems to be zooming.
I put Spy Sweeper and Zone alert's firewall and anti-virus. The firewall and anti-virus come free with optimum online. I hope between the 3 I will be good as all three are always active.

All Right I brought that e-machine back because it had trouble detecting the key board. I got an HP with a Atholon 64 3800, 1g of ram and a 250gb hard drive and a Dual layer DVD wr+it has a laser scribe feature that burns a label on the other side of the disc and a regular DVD player. All this for $16 more + a $50 mail in rebate. Best Buy hooked me up. Same protection.
I heard "Black Ice" fire wall is one of the best out there. Does anyone know anything about it?

I saw this thread and recalled Fred's PC catching fire. Now that it's over, I hope he finds that funny in retrospect. Made me chuckle.
