I have signed the petition through i am not certain Bob Rock is the problem.
The fires that forged Metalica's genious was metal instrumental genius more akin in format to Classical musis. Non repettive and such. All their new shit just follows that same old wack format with one repeating rift and a repeating hook. This worked great on the black album as metallica is just that good. But to once again achieve immrotal status they must go back to the old ways.

To piggy-back on Rob's comments....
They also need to find some good content to actually sing about. A song about a 2X4 just isn't going to cut it anymore. They are a metal band, actually THE metal band and they have to find something edgy to sing about.
One of the best things I've always love about Metallica is their lyrics. They've always stood out for me as outstanding. Finding something "metal-like" to sing about that really touches that "anger" nerve that makes you want to bang your head and then bang your neighbor's head into a metal spike is what I'm talking about.
So when you add Rob's comments about the music to my comments about the lyrics, we can all see that Metallica has quite a bit of work to do.

Q: Which of these bands is actually in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? 1. Deep Purple 3. Black Sabbath 4. Van Halen 5. Lynrd Skynrd 6. Sex Pistols 7. Alice Cooper 8. Genesis 9. Kiss 10. Steve Miller
A: None of them. ZZ Top made the cut, but none of these groups did. So did the Ramones and the Talking Heads. Aerosmith made the cut as did AC/DC and the Clash. (http://www.rockhall.com/hof/allinductees.asp)
Criterion for induction (http://www.rockhall.com/hof/process.asp) indicates: "Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.
The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year."
Quotes by none other than Ozzy Osbourne include: "Just take our name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the 'supposed' elite of the Industry and the Media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is totally irrelevant to me."
"Why don't they let the fans vote? As it stands now, what's the point? It's a joke. It's about gladhanding and grandstanding and I don't want any part of it."
The 2005 Inductees were: Buddy Guy, The O'Jays, The Pretenders, Percy Sledge, and U2. Nominated and not inducted were: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Wanda Jackson, J. Giles Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Randy Newman, Gram Parsons, The Pretenders, The Sex Pistols, and The Stooges.
What a load of monkey manure. If you ever had a thought that a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame could be interesting, put that thought right out your head. Although the place began inducting in 1986, Jimi Hendrix did not make it until 1992. The Doors had to wait until 1993. Led Zepplin and Janis Joplin were not added until 1995. Pink Floyd, 1996. Eric Clapton, 2000. Queen, 2001. At least half those groups should be founding inductees to anything pretending to be a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nine years without Led Zeppelin really tells you all you need to know, but come on. This is really ludicrous.

Metallica new song work in progress: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwsbUUEOT9gFirst 1.5 minutes are BS talking & replacing a guitar. The song riffs again and it sounds a little cool. 3 minutes in the intro riffs are off and the actual song kicks. Totals maybe 7 minutes long, which they excuse as this is not the final song. It's got promise. Sounds a lot like older stuff, faster and harder. I really like the bass and drum grooves. But Hetfield totally sings wimpy most the time with some half-hearted shouts "death is not the end"; this talk about death, making me wonder if they will do a resurrection theme for the new album. Whenever it gets released I have hopes Rick Rubin does something right with these guys.

Here's another new song for the upcoming Metallica album: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNMzWCOEFfUThis sounds really fucking lame. About a minute and half in I was wanting to turn it off. I hope they don't use this crap in the studio.

Both new Metallica songs are an improvement over the old album, which I happened to throw out of the car window while speeding on 684. On the second song, I really like the breakdown riffs at the "Ford Taurus" piece. Hopefully they will fine tune these things and they'll sound better on the studio album. Either way, you know we'll all buy it.
