Speaking as a stem cell, I want more rights for me and my brethren stem cells. Consider this: how long before (why not already) China becomes an exporter of human stem cells and literally a baby factory. Ewww. Anyhow, in a few years they'll be able to recreate these things from KY jelly and swizel sticks and the issue will be as dead as the Soviet Union. Until then, I've got no strong justification for preventing the use of human organs removed from the body for scientific purposes. How and why should of course be regulated, but I am against stretching the issue . I believe the issue as it stands is that they are allowed to use existing stem cells but preventing from "collecting" new ones? Correct me if that's wrong. In the end, how does one regulate this anyway? Do we sent CIA agents into science labs to sample dishes to determine if they are human cells, embryo cells, animal cells, plant cells, or just boogers? Ewww.

the whole stem cell think is hard for me at the end of the day its alot like abortion but worse. if my understanding is correct they, they fertilize a human fetis then extract enzines from it then the embryo dies. my cathlic upbringing tells me this is murder pure and simple but my logic and shaministic belief tell me its ok. this is a delema im going to have to think about for a long time.

Oh this is a toughy. Stem cells are awesome and are as close to real life magic as i have seen or heard of.
The overriding thing her is human life. We as a civilization (America) have danced arround the subject of genesis of human life. When does human life begin. We can not afford to be on the fence any longer. We must decide and stand by that decision and then and only then will many other foggy questions be unequivically answered.
PS- Finding ways to prevent the weak from dying is detremental to the welfare of the entire species. Ofcourse we can find a way arround this and eventually we will generate our own DNA and after that everyone will have the good DNA till we find the best DNA and then everyone will have the same DNA and we will all be vunerable to the same thing and all will die. But since it wont happen in my life time i say gimma a double shot of them there stem cells.

"I'm a stem cell and I'm ok..." (sing along Monty Python fans). I guess Kerry is making this an issue after Reagan's death under the idea that research can aid alzheimer's and Nancy Reagen supports it. He's calling for GW to revoke a ban placed on the research. Anyone know, I thought that ban was dubbed a compromise with existing cells up for grabs but preventing collection of new specimens? This issue gets mad religious right people. I am a believer and have faith. But I also find it other perfectly legal things sins too (like adultery for one) but this is a Democracy not a theocracy. I believe strongly my Christian faith arose from roots that were disinterested in government and should remain that way. Render unto Caeser what is Caesar's. It's hardly a religion grounded in dominating the people, it's supposed to be for the people, with free will. Free will is the point, you should have the choice to be a heathen. If you fuck up, you burn, but you should be compelled to make that decision on your own. PS Rob's right about the species. I'd say old farts living longer is a major drain on the society and economy too, since by definition they will produce nothing and consume things. Yes, these people are parasites of the economy I am sorry to say. Not so bad, except that there is already an ass-load out there NOT dying and we don't need more old people than young people. This is already why Social Security will fail within our lifetimes.
