I thinks its a great idea. The problem with D&D is once the core rule books are out they no longer have a bread and butter income. This leads to revisions and endless source books which just get grinded out.
Now they have made miniatures affordable and introduced a tight combat system to use them. I dont even mind them being random as there is some excitment to finding out what you got. Plus the whole Chainmail thing was a disaster.
What I dont like: -The combat system is shit. They did not simplify enough. The skirmish rules really just have you doing 2 charcters at a time. That only makes things have as fast. So if it would take you 4 hours to roll out a battle between 20 on 20 now it might only take 2 hours. Not good enough.
The mass combat assumes you have lots of guys of the same type. And no matter what introducing spells into mass combat is virtually impossible. It might be possible to tweak it so it works but i am skeptical.
Not enough monsters: There is mostly charcters and not enough monsters. We have like 3 boxes of minis already and only maybe 5 monsters. Unmber hulk, zombie, dire stuff, and hell hound. No good. I need more.

I like the fact that you can get affordable pre painted miniatures so you can have fodder. As for the monsters you are right we have 6 wild elf rangers but one zombie. I believe monster encounters happen far more often than friendly encounters ...besides why would you need miniatures for a non- combat encounter? And even if you had a hostile encounter how often is it with a group of demi-humans??? More monsters please!!!!!!!!

I knew nothing about this, so I looked at the pictures on Wizards and did think they stocked a lot of 'friendlies' on the lot. I figured this was to assure every PC could find a mini to match his character. But, if this means 6 elven rangers for every monster, something is seriously wrong with the randomization.
Hmmm, I am envisioning a group of Ring's elven archers aligned against the party....

--An excert from the Chronicles of hell-----------
"Amon sat upon his throne of blood and considered recent events at length. This adventuring party of mortals had escaped him and foiled his master's plan to aquire the Vallis Crystal. This failure would mean that Geryon would remain the deposed lord of the fifth. Or even worse, what terrors would Asmodeus visit upon Geryon for this failure. These images brought a smile of malice to Amon's face. He enjoyed this arrangement were he served Geryon enjoying the fruits of their victories but Geryon alone always took the reprecussions of their failures. However this momentary joy escaped Amon when he relised things would continue as is. Since Geryon's explosion he and Amon had waged endlessly for control of the fifth layer of hell. Prince Levistus, the current ruler had opposed them at every turn. Slaying other devils was not Amon's forte. How he enjoyed slaying demons so much more. In fact only one thing pleased him more then slaying demons. And that was the blood of mortals. How their delicate flesh would peel apart beneath his fallen blows. These adventurers had escaped but Amon knew more then just their names. Amon was very old and had seen much in his centuries of existence. He knew that all things went in cycles and that eventually another opportunity would find its way into his hands. He stared unearringly through his newly aquired crystal ball. Within it e say his next move. Even in the fires of hell he remembered that Vengeance was a dish that best served Cold."

An excerpt from the light lord's diary........And there stood Geryon and his duke Ahmon and several other foul fiends how dare they ask to strike a deal with the very people of the church they desecrated!!!!! I knew as Geryon did that even with the valor of the pelorions and the meager powers of the group that would come to be known as the pentagon of power that we stood little chance but I would not be patronized by any fiend!!!!! So as he said "I think they mean to fight "it was our moment to strike and strike we did! His fiends unlieshed hellish fire upon us and many of the men and women that served the church were gone in one fell swoop but the time to mourn was not this time it was time to fight!!!!! I saw that the penatgon was unphased by this attack.....maybe I underestimated thier resolve. Then hell broke loose worse than any storm in all the planes. The pentagon rained down power That for most has been unseen. Magical attacks with volcanic magnitude rained down like the lightning of the god's. All of geryon's sadistic minions were destroyed. But Geryon and his lacky Ahmon would remain. Then, as I and the pentagon did battle with the deposed ruler on the fifth level of hell I saw something that I would not have expected........A magnificient battle between Ahmon and the Mighty Dwarven warrior Popaxe. Popaxe would not be denied vengeance for what happened to him and his friends and brothers at the hands of the disgusting devil lord Ahmon.Ahmon had been defeated single handedly by a mortal ,Pelor was with this hero. As Geryon snatched people with his serpantine tail and hit others with those very people Ahmon awoke, he was not dead. The jackass dwarf instead of finishing the job he went to retrieve his pilfered magic items. But alass a look of fear as deep as the ocean was in the Fiend's eyes he was defeated and his master was not faring much better so he did only what a true coward would do he used magic to escape leaving his master to the wrath of Pelor's chosen champions A rugged group to say the least rough and tumble but I have come to know that they mean well they just do not have the proper upbringing to function in normal society. So that leaves Geryon. In a desperate act he blew his horn and several fiendish beasts were summoned but it did not matter the Conjuror of the penatgon blasted this pitiful little band into pieces all that was left was Geryon but he too dissapeared like the yellow bellied snake that he is!!!! The devils had failed at their attempt to regain Asmodious's favor and would have to answer for their failure at the hands of us mere mortals. Also though they would also have to answer to themselves, for they know as I do the pentagon will return for them and the next time there may not be an escape, can we really hide from such a group? See these Fiends have been around a long time and they know that everything is cyclical and the pentagon will have another opportunity to take their heads and their honor if they they ever had any...........

I have been working on it since I saw the excerpt from the chronicles of hell I just re-read it and it shoul've had more about Geryon getting the "beacon style beating" but of course it was a one sided account

New books, new miniatures, awesome.
I love new books. I just hate paying for them or using their bullshit rules in my campaign.
Arch fiends minis sound cool.
Unearthed arcana from wizards of the coast. Not to be confused with Arcana Unearthed from Malhavok press.
There even coming out with the planewalkers guide. Even though there is no real planescape in 3E.

Plane walkers thats great notning better than wanting 100 bucks worth of books that sometimes really stink. Plyers guide to faerun well many prestige classes and changes to the local feats sound slike mass confusion.
