US Pharma is my division within GSK I am a contracted worker trying to get GSK employee status. My contract runs up August 2005, I have until then to get hired. Or so I thought.
"Message from Chris Viehbacher -- US Pharma to Reduce Staff Monday 24 Jan 2005 [Note to US Pharma staff: Please refer to voice mail issued by Chris Monday morning.]
US Pharma Colleagues:
The US Pharma management team and I have made the difficult decision to reduce staff. By the end of the first quarter, we expect to have about 250 fewer positions.
All members of the Pharmaceutical Operating Committee are currently undertaking a thorough assessment of current and future needs in their part of the business, and will make recommendations on the extent of the job reductions in the areas for which they are responsible. We expect the reductions to come primarily from non-customer-facing positions; that is, positions that don’t interact directly with our customers. We expect this assessment to be complete in early February, after which the people in the affected positions will be notified immediately.
To the extent possible, we will eliminate open positions and positions currently held by contractors before considering positions held by regular GSK employees.
This is a difficult task. The contributions of all employees allowed the US business to record solid performances in 2003 and 2004 in the face of tremendous challenges. For that, the POC and I are grateful.
In 2005, the challenges will continue to mount. We’re facing a much tougher business environment, marked by aggressive generic competitors, pressures for increased rebates to state and federal purchasers, and the additional cost pressures associated with launching new brands. All contribute to the forces building toward fundamental change in our industry. GSK must take bold and sometimes painful steps to adapt to this change. As the premier business unit in the global group of GSK companies, US Pharma must lead the way.
We’ve made significant progress in improving operating efficiencies and the cost-effectiveness of our spending, and we will continue to build on these efforts. But as we look at where we want to be over the next several years, it has become clear that we cannot achieve the necessary cost reductions with process improvements alone. Therefore, with the POC’s leadership, the US business has faced up to the need to selectively reduce staffing in some areas.
Implementation of this decision requires us to challenge operations in every division, and to recognize that, in some cases, the demand for services has diminished. In other cases, we must accept that these staff reductions will require us to adapt to different levels of service – and sometimes no service at all.
For many of us, this will add up to a new way of working. Which means, in turn, that an immediate task for everyone will be to re-establish priorities and recalibrate expectations around the support we give and receive from our colleagues. The POC understands this represents another difficult task, and it stands solidly and unanimously behind this business imperative.
While we will choose the positions for elimination based on how we can best meet our needs going forward, it’s important for everyone to understand that the people in all positions in US Pharma have provided significant value to the business over the recent past, and have helped us meet our objectives during challenging times. This action is driven by business considerations alone.
I appreciate that announcing these decisions holds the potential to create uncertainty throughout the organization, and that we will experience some trying times while they are implemented. I also appreciate that many of you will have questions, which at this moment will have no definite or adequate answers. The POC and I will provide updates as soon as we can, and I request your patience while the process works.
As we look ahead, I will continue to rely on your professionalism to keep our business moving forward. We must stretch to reach our goals in 2005, and even a momentary loss of focus will make this climb even steeper.
I also will continue to rely on your sense of fairness and decency to treat everyone with respect throughout the process. In US Pharma we take pride in both what we do and how we do it. Let’s take pride now in how we handle this challenge.
Chris"
This is a place I liked working at so much I wanted to recruit people to come work here. I wanted to live here for many years to come in sunny North Carolina at a job I enjoyed. I am obsolete, again.

This truly sucks. I feel for all my hard-working compatriots out here. My friends, Buckley and Booth, I understand your sweat, your toil and the uncertainty of the shit-soaked future peeking its grotesque head over the green vomit-choked horizon.
I too am in Hell, although, my Hell is a paying one, for the moment. Therefore my misery and suffering cannot compare to my friend Buck's slow torture of an uncertain future.
But I feel that forces and the rythms of the universe are coalescing and beginning to collide, for I too am suffering at this hellish God-forsaken joke of a job. It seems that our brotherhood is being singled-out, that we are being targeted, not for termination, but for unending suffering. Every day I come to terms with my mortality; that these children who I am supposed to teach, allow me to live at their very whim, allow me to draw breath just for their very amusement. How cruel and twisted Mother Fate is indeed.
I find myself wishing for a quick death. A respectful enemy would at least give me that. Instead I am left to wander into enemy territory, Hunt's Point, and stand at the front of a mob of gang members, malcontents and future Welfare recipients. I stand there for hours, without a break, not able to go and enjoy even a prolonged shit in a comfortable stall. Instead, I do a virtual pee-ppe dance and share a urinal with a water-bug named Steve, who is so big, he is collecting unemployment checks.
I get cursed at, disrespected, ignored and laughed at. My principal banned my class from the computer lab. I get buried under mounds of paperwork. I stay at home on weekends and figure out lesson plans because the Board of Education didn't give us readers for the kids. I strain my brian trying to figure out a math cirriculum for geniuses, or average white kids in good neighborhoods, and how to teach it to disinterested ghetto kids who know they will be on Welfare soon.
And I get harrassed by parents who want to know why their children "is" so stupid.
I have to dig out my own parking space because plows don't plow our street and our parking lot isn't big enough for everybody. I have to go to two-hour meetings every Monday where I get treated like the child, or get berated like a child. I get yelled at by lunch aids. LUNCH AIDS! I wish they would all get AIDS.
I have to look over my shoulder whenever I talk about anything personal or anything that can be misconstrued as being disgruntled talk because there are spys lurking the building. I have to get observed on Wednesdays by people that tell me my class is out of control, and THEY can't even control them. They actually walk out in frustration. I can't walk out.
And worst of all, I can't get it through my own head that its not all my fault, these aren't my children. It must be MY lessons, it must be MY classroom management, it must be MY incompetence. So now I have no life because I have to figure it all out. And now my back-up plan of moving down to North Carolina to work at Glaxo-Smith-Klein and hang with Buck is shot to hell cause he may not be there anymore.
I need a new job.

I had it out with my principal the other day. She is this old spanish bitch who thinks she can intimidate anybody and everybody and for some reason, she is successful at this, even though most teachers in my building have tenure. If I had tenure, I would rape, kill, pillage and burn to my hearts content. However, I don't just yet and still I pillage and burn, no raping or killing yet.
Anyway, she doesn't scare me. I am, after all, an alpha male, and it's MY way or the fuckin' highway bitch, even though she is the boss and I'm the peon in this scenario. But FUCK dat, yo!
So she tries to come over the top on me, yelling at me and trying to intimadate me. I just laughed and smiled. I was actually amused. She didn't handle this very well. This may be why she activley tries to get rid of the males in the building. But then, why hire me in the first place you ask? Because she need fresh bodies to fill the slots in the ghetto and she'll take anybody she can get. Did you know my school has about a 50% turn-over rate? EVERY YEAR?! I wonder why.
So I just come right back over the top on her, not yelling, but defending myself forcefully because I'm not going to let her sully my good name, especially since I work my ass off for her and those rat-bastard kids. Its one thing to ignore me, she's done that for two years, and I'd rather prefer that, but this year the target is on MY back and I'm under a lot of heat. The Assistant Principle, Mr. Nanton, a big black guy, was sitting there with his head down, trying not to be noticed as we two titans went at it.
So now I have to get the fuck out of dodge because I despise that hellhole and the principle. I found an employment ad for an Assistant Librarian at Consumer Reports just five minutes awayfrom home. How much you think that job pays? That sounds like a nice quite place to work, no screaming welfare hounds running around, crackhead parents or back-stabbing teachers.

ANYWAY I SEE EVERY DAY WHILE IM OUT THERE LOOKING- NOTHING BUT RETARTS AND THEY ALREADY HAVE A JOB. NO THEY ARE NOT GOOD AT IT, NO THEY DONT EVEN HAVE COMMON SENSE, BUT SOME IDIOT HIRED THEM BECAUSE THEY PISS CLEAN AND HAVE NO RECORD.
AMERICAS WORKFORCE HAS NOW BECOME LIKE POLITICS ITS ALL ABOUT WHO ASS NEEDS TO BE KISSED AND WHO DOES THE BEST KISSING. WELL LET ME TELL YOU I AM THE LAST GUY WHO WOULD EVER DEPEND ON SOMEONE ON THE INSIDE TO HELP ME BUT THERE IS JUST NO OTHER WAY TO GET A DECENT JOB.
SO LOOK FOR SOMEONE SOMEWHERE ON THE INSIDE OF SOMETHING AND REMIND THEM ABOUT THE TIME YOU SAVED HIM OR HER FROM THAT GROUP LOOKING TO KICK THERE ASS, OR HOW YOU CALMED BIG "L" DOWN SO HE WOULDNT CHOP THEM UP WITH A CLAW HAMMER. THEN TELL THEM YOU KNOW WHERE BIG "L" LIVES AND YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM SELLING HIM THE INFO OF WHERE YOU WORK SINCE HE STILL CARRIES THAT HAMMER WITH YOUR NAME ON IT.
